Thinking of buying a new computer? A Dublin company has produced the world’s first ecologically safe PC. The iameco is made from wood from sustainable forests and is free from the harmful chemicals and heavy metals built into most computers.
Designed by MicroPro Computers, the iameco range is designed to use up to a third less power than a mainstream computer. They do not contain brominated flame-retardants, plastics/PVCs and heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury that are used in regular computer manufacture. Reusable materials and recyclable packaging are also used, resulting in zero waste.
“We have concentrated on the updateable, upgradeable, reusable, recyclable approach to computers”, says MicroPro director Paul Maher. “Our product has three times the lifespan of a normal computer – seven to ten years as opposed to the two years of the big brands. It’s a modular design, which means you can take out and replace an individual part when it fails, as opposed to the whole machine.”
MicroPro hopes to become the first PC maker in the world to earn the EU’s prestigious Eco-Label mark, for high-quality consumer products that meet the highest environmental standards.
