The forest conservation organisation Just Forests has launched a nation-wide campaign to urge Irish schools to write to the Taoiseach and encourage him to go to the crucial climate change negotiations to be held in Copenhagen in December.
It is hoped that schools will visit the link
Schools can send their message to the Taoiseach by filling in an on-line form. They are also asked to create a colourful “SEAL THE DEAL” banner with the school’s name.
Shortly before the talks commence in Copenhagen a representative from each participating school will be invited to hand-deliver the message to the Taoiseach before he leaves for Copenhagen.
“With the world hurtling towards catastrophic climate change delay will increase the chances of overshooting the target of restricting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius. Already, at less than one degree, hundreds of millions of people are suffering as a result of climate change,” says Tom Roche of Just Forests.
“While the financial crisis has dominated politics throughout 2009 the climate crisis continues to worsen. Copenhagen is the world’s big chance to tackle climate change and we cannot afford to lose this opportunity to avoid the worst effects of the changes already affecting the climate. More than NAMA, more than the current economic crisis, climate change threatens generations to come and needs to be stopped now. We need to learn the lessons of the financial crisis and ensure that the world is not engulfed by a much larger climate crisis.”
