Well done to the 28 walkers in mid-Kerry who took part in an ecumenical Lenten walk on the theme ‘On Water’. Thanks to Declan Crowley of Killorglin Parish Pastoral Council for sending us this summary of the event:
On Saturday April 12th 28 walkers, ranging in age from 5 to 75, gathered at St. James, Killorglin. The occasion was a local response to what Pope Francis has called “the globalisation of indifference”. Similarly, we sought to react to Archbishop Welby`s call to be Christians who are “positive, generous and open-hearted”.
A brisk north-westerly did not deter us, so we struck off, banners waving, along the old Great Southern Railway Line, crossing the old railway viaduct and continuing through the morning along the banks of our beautiful River Laune!
Along the way, we paused to listen: Rev. Mairt from St. Michaels, Shane from Trocaire and our neighbour Jim each spoke to us about cherishing our heritage, appreciating our water and enjoying our countryside.
Out of solidarity with nine-year-old Enestina and her Mom, from Malawi, we carried 15 litres of water to St. Michael’s where, at noon, we planted potatoes and oats in St. Michael’s garden.
Immersed, as we were, in this community Lenten activity of walking to “our well”, we found the morning both enriching and enjoyable.
One last word: a special “thanks” to the 24 children of our community who last October created our colourful banners – one of St. Francis, the other with the word ‘solidarity’.
Come join next Lent when, please God, we`ll do it all again!
