Eco Quakers visit Sonairte – The National Ecology Centre

A group of Eco Quakers visited Sonairte – The National Ecology Centre – in Co Meath for a day trip at the end of September 2011.

Sonairte 026Their visit included informative talks and demonstrations about organic gardening, growing herbs and their dietary and health uses, and pruning apple trees. Also, a talk on apple varieties and their many uses, which included sampling of a variety of delicious recipes.

As well as the opportunity to pick the brains of the knowledgeable volunteers, there was plenty of time to wander around the Eco Shop and the grounds, which include an energy courtyard, a small bee museum, an organic garden, an orchard, a tree Sonairte 038nursery, a bird hide, a rath and a nature trail.

The hospitality was second to none with wonderful scones on arrival, delicious home-made soup and bread at lunchtime and apple crumble with cream served before departure. Anyone who was still peckish – or in need of Sonairte 044caffeine – could visit the lovely Mustard Seed Café at any time during the day-trip.

Sonairte was established in 1988 by members of the local community and concerned environmentalists to provide education in all aspects of ecology. The founders drew inspiration from organisations such as the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales, the HDRA (now Garden Organic) in the UK and the Permaculture Research Institute in Australia.

The garden at Sonairte has had organic certification since 1986 and courses have been held on Sonairte 048commercial and back garden organic horticulture, ecology, biodiversity, green building and sustainable living ever since.

Sonairte receives very little funding – apart from two DSCF4655paid staff, all the work is carried out by a team of dedicated volunteers. Amazing!

Sonairte proved to be a perfect place for a church/community eco trip! Why not arrange one for YOUR church/community group?!
