‘Giving Back to Nature’ celebration marks the gift of Red Bog to Green Sod Land Trust

A symbolic handover of Red Bog to Green Sod Land Trust took place recently in Co Carlow.

The acceptance of the land was a defining moment for the Trust, and a start on the path to what it envisages will be the creation of green corridors the length and breadth of Ireland.

To mark the donation of the first piece of land to Green Sod Land Trust, benefactor David Rowe, directors, volunteers and supporters of Green Sod Land Trust gathered with the local community in Red Bog, Co. Carlow on April 16th 2011.

The seventy people who attended left their cars in Clonmore and walked the half mile boreen to the celebration, in order to reduce the impact on the local environment. As the sun shone brightly on the garden in Red Bog, Sheila Gallagher, chairperson of the Trust, welcomed everybody to the historic occasion and emphasised the importance of saving natural habitats for all species.

Will Paton, chairman of Carlow County Council, expressed his delight in attending and invited people to be still for a moment to listen to the voice of nature, and one and all delighted in the chorus of birdsong which ensued.
David said an emotional and inspiring few words which culminated in the handing over of the land.

“The handing over of this land is a defining moment for us, and a start on the path to what we envisage will be the creation of green corridors the length and breadth of this island” said Nellie McLaughlin, Green Sod director.
