An Ecumenical Prayer Service to mark the International Day of Climate Change took place in St George’s Parish Church, High Street, Belfast on 4th December.
The service was organised by Christian Aid and Trócaire on behalf of Stop Climate Chaos Northern Ireland.
It was an opportunity to celebrate the beauty of creation and to pray for those in some of the poorest communities of the world who are already feeling the negative impacts of climate change. Prayers were also said for world leaders meeting at the UN climate change conference in Cancún, Mexico.
The service, which was led by Rev Brian Stewart of St George’s and Father Martin Magill of St Oliver Plunkett’s, was followed by a Mexican Stand-off Flash Mob at the City Hall.
The day was rounded off with a concert held at the Oh Yeah Centre with Team Fresh and Pocket Billiards providing the entertainment.
The aim of the day was to raise awareness in Northern Ireland about Stop Climate Chaos and its petition calling for a Northern Ireland Climate Act. Lots of signatures were collected for the petition … but more are still needed.
