Patricia McCormack sent us this update:
Our Steelstown & Culmore Parish Eco Group were very grateful for the grant we received from ECI to promote biodiversity in the grounds of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Steelstown, Derry. This is how we used it.
One Sunday during the Season of Creation 2024 we spoke at all Masses about the loss of biodiversity crisis and the small – but important actions we could take. We asked for volunteers to help plant 1,000 crocuses in a grass bed at the entrance to car park and were delighted when 24 turned up.
The crocuses have bloomed and were tangible signs of hope, lifting our spirits and, also very importantly, provided an early supply of nectar and pollen for hungry pollinators emerging from hibernation.
The crocuses have made an impact, many people have commented on them and there have been new opportunities to talk about care of Creation. We look forward to them returning each Spring.
