A Visit to Cabragh Wetlands by Anna Byrne, ECI

Cabragh Wetlands is the biggest single area of freshwater semi-natural floodplain habitat on the River Suir near Thurles, Co Tipperary. Environmental conservation, on what was the site of a sugar beet factory, is the main purpose of the area. The centre also provides opportunities for recreation, and education activities with adequate space and facilities for workshops.

Fr Michael Long, manager of the centre, invited me to introduce ECI at a workshop on Saturday April 20th. Delegates from three parishes in the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly attended the first of several sessions intended to heighten awareness of care for creation.  It is the initiative of Bishop Kieran O’Reilly, of the Archdioceses of Cashel and Emily, who wishes to encourage environmental concerns in all aspects of parish life.

Participants were guided through our creation story by following the cosmic walk in the morning. Then in the afternoon, after a light lunch, a facilitated session on the role of a variety of native birds and animals in the Irish ecosystem brought the day to a close. Many of the species discussed, in ‘stuffed’ variety, formed the centre piece in the room and aided the discussion. It was most interesting, enjoyable and informative day.
