Climate Change Reflections at Rathgar Methodist Church from Maureen Rowan, Methodist Representative to ECI
During Lenten Bible Studies at Rathgar Methodist Church, David Holmes explained the significance of placing his painting beside the Climate Justice Candle. The theme of the series of Friday morning reflections is how to reconcile with the planet on which we live and in which we have caused so much damage.
This painting is called “Climate Change” and the word “Change” is represented in the Ogham text. The colours chosen represent the change in the earth’s temperature due to mankind’s activities. The colours at the bottom are normal “Earthly” colours of green, brown, blue etc, but, as you go up the painting, the colours get more red, thus indicating hotter and hotter temperatures. This reflects the damage being done to the climate by mankind burning fossil fuel and all the other wasteful and thoughtless actions. Ogham text is read from bottom to top and that’s why the colours are ascending in heat, just like global warming.
The Ogham letters used in the word CHANGE can be seen here.
