ECI Climate Justice Candle Visits St Anne’s Church, Bailieborough, Co Cavan

Patricia Keenan, Chairperson of Kilmore Care of Creation sent us this report:

St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough welcomed the Eco-Congregation Ireland Climate Justice Candle and lit it at the beginning of Masses this weekend in St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough acknowledging the need to shine a light on climate justice and sow seeds of hope.

“In his Encyclical Letter, Pope Francis speaks of a way forward that embraces an interconnected relationship with each other, with the earth and with God.  He tells us that all that God has made is sacred and that what is happening in relation to climate change is impacting our natural world and this creates problems for people elsewhere resulting in harsh conditions for food production and increasing poverty.  Therefore, the cry of the poor, indeed the cry of our young people and what is happening today will impact upon future generations.  It means that climate justice is an issue for us.”

Today, we Shine a Light on Climate Justice for the millions of people already suffering the effects of climate change, for future generations and for the whole of Creation.  We thank Eco-Congregation Ireland and the Kilmore Care of Creation Group who have collaborated with us in our endeavour to raise awareness and promote action.

We need to rethink among other things the question of human power, its meaning and its limits. For our power has frenetically increased in a few decades. We have made impressive and awesome technological advances, and we have not realized that at the same time we have turned into highly dangerous beings, capable of threatening the lives of many beings and our own survival. Today it is worth repeating the ironic comment of Solovyov about an “age which was so advanced as to be actually the last one”. We need lucidity and honesty in order to recognize in time that our power and the progress we are producing are turning against us.
