Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful – Carbon Literacy for Community Leaders

Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, an environmental charity in NI, is excited to announce a new, no-cost training programme for community leaders and community groups.  This training, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs, aims to raise knowledge, awareness and confidence about Climate Change issues and supports community members with accessible ways to take action to reduce the impacts of Climate Change.

The training is called Carbon Literacy for Community Leaders and is delivered in three, short modules with a mix of self-study and online meetings – in total approx. 8-10 hours of learning.

The training covers the following topics,

  • Climate Change science
  • Global and local impacts of Climate Change
  • Climate justice and equity
  • Climate policy – global and local
  • Carbon Footprints
  • Solutions and the way ahead – ways to get involved as an individual and a community
  • Carbon Pledge – a commitment to take action

On course completion, Community Leaders receive a certificate from the Carbon Literacy Project, https://carbonliteracy.com/ (recognised as a ‘transformative organisation’ by the UN Climate Change Committee) with all course materials also being CPD accredited. You will also then receive a full set of prepared Carbon Smart Community resources, enabling you to take your community members through a similar, manageable programme.  These resources are flexible and can be adapted to suit the needs of your groups, context and structure.  KNIB offers support for community leaders as they begin to roll out this training.

Increasingly, people are expressing concerns about the impacts of Climate Change globally and locally.  Public surveys in NI regularly see issues raised about the environment, particularly Climate Change and damage or loss of habitats, being the main concern.  As individuals and communities begin to call out for support, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful is keen to provide training, guidance and advice. These DAERA funded, easily accessible, training materials provide an online, discussion based approach to learning more about the challenge ahead, ensuring that everyone feels they can be part of the solution.

If you are interested and would like to discuss the course further, or find out more, get in contact by emailing Scott Howes at [email protected].

Booking for the Carbon Literacy for Community Leaders programme opened January 17th but they can set training dates/times according to your needs in advance, through agreement if preferred.  Please check this link – https://www.keepnorthernirelandbeautiful.org/carbonliteracy.
