John Andrew sent us this update:
Carrigaline Union of Parishes Eco Group has been looking at the importance of bird nesting boxes. With that in mind we have just completed a bird box prototype. We plan on putting up bird boxes in the grounds of St Mary’s Church Carrigaline, St John’s Monkstown and the Rectory.
Why do we need bird nesting boxes?
With naturally occurring spaces on the decline, bird houses – or nest boxes as they are also known – are crucial to the survival of birds, providing them with a place to rest and raise their young.
How do bird boxes help the environment?
Indeed, even when boxes are not being used for nesting, egg laying and as a home for fledglings, they can provide somewhere for birds to roost. They provide shelter from bad weather – rain, snow, wind and cold.
We are really looking forward to seeing them in place in time for the nesting season!
