In autumn 2010 Whitechurch Parish entered its church and churchyard in to the annual Beautiful South Dublin County Council competition. This competition seeks to honour businesses, housing schemes and estates and community institutions in South Dublin which work to enhance their own properties and environment. Having entered this competition for the first time, Whitechurch was pleased on that occasion to receive three awards, which were (1) Best Biodiversity Award, (2) Best Environmental Youth Initiative category award (Highly Commended), and (3) Best New entry award (Highly Commended).

South Dublin Awards 2011This past autumn, the Parish submitted an entry to this competition again, and on this occasion, the award received was the ‘Best Biodiversity award’ for its church and churchyard.

The award ceremony was held before Christmas in County Hall, Tallaght. Mayor Caitriona Jones presented the awards and said “It is encouraging to see the number of entries received for the ‘Beautiful South Dublin’ County Competition, and indeed the range of categories representing residential, business, and community initiatives. I am especially delighted to see a category for schools. I know that the good work and habits associated with these awards will always stay with the young people here and have a positive effect on the future of this County.”

In March 2011 Whitechurch became the first Church of Ireland parish in the Republic to win an Eco-Congregation Ireland award.
