A new European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) project in Belfast involves collecting old winter coats for homeless people in Belfast. By taking part in the project you will be helping some of the most vulnerable people in our local society while finding a new use for your unwanted clothing and therefore diverting waste from landfill.
By participating in the project Belfast City Council will register your actions in our European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) event in November. To find out more about EWWR log onto http://www.ewwr.eu. You will also be registered as an Eco-Faith organisation with the opportunity to be involved in similar projects with Belfast City Council’s waste management service in the future.
All coats collected will be given to The Welcome Organisation, which will pass them to homeless and rough sleepers in Belfast. The organisation provides a drop in centre, crisis accommodation for females and night-time street outreach.
Last year, the drop-in centre had a total of 24,000 visits and this year the organisation has seen a 30% increase on the number of people coming to it for support. If this winter is as harsh as last year’s the need for winter coats will be even greater. For more information on The Welcome Organisation log onto www.welcomebelfast.org
