Could you live off £1 a day for 5 days?

Could you live on £1 a day for food and drink? Thousands of people throughout the UK will be taking up this Live Below the Line challenge from 2nd to 6th May.

Participants will be living off porridge, lentils and potatoes and whatever they can find from foraging.

Some will be giving the money they save to charity. Revd Alison Tomlin, President of Methodist Conference, is undertaking the challenge and plans to support the Methodist Relief and Development Fund (many of its projects have an ecological slant).

There are a variety of official partner charities in the project for whom one can get sponsored. Although the project is primarily designed to raise awareness about poverty, it is also an admirable and fun way to try and consume a bit less for one week!

Mariam El Azm, a charity worker in her early 20s, is taking part. “I believe the world has the means, both financial and technological to end extreme poverty,” she says. “What is lacking is the political will to do so. This is why I decided to take on this incredible challenge and raise money for RESULTS UK. They empower ordinary citizens like you and me to bring about change in national and international politics”.
