A third of the perishable food we buy ends up in the bin, which is horrific
The most common foods thrown out are bread, apples, yoghurt, spreads and dips and up to 50% of salad ingredients. This wastage can cost the average household up to €1,000 per year.
Wasted food is not only a waste of money and resources, but it is also a major contributor to climate change.
A new user-friendly website launched by Rachel Allen and colleagues – www.stopfoodwaste.ie – provides tips and advice on shopping sensibly; recipes and uses for leftovers; composting and local information (eg brown bins, local amenity centres etc).
