World People’s Conference on Climate Change draws up People’s Accord

The World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth was held in Cochabamba, Bolivia in April. A gathering of 35,000 delegates from 140 countries drew up solutions to prevent climate change following the poor result of Copenhagen 2009.
The outcome of the Peoples Climate Conference was to create a People’s Accord, the summary of 17 separate working groups from the Conference outlining the commitment required by the global community to prevent dangerous levels of carbon in the world’s atmosphere.
Amongst the conclusions coming out of the conference was the need to limit warming to 1°C and reduce atmospheric carbon concentrations to 300ppm. This is in great contrast to the very weak targets enshrined in the Copenhagen Accord.
The conference also endorsed the Global Day of Action on climate on 4th December in the Action Schedule of the final conclusions of the Actions Strategy Working Group.
