Restoring Priority Woodland Habitats conference

A two day international conference has been organised by Coillte’s woodland restoration project team to publicise the results of its four year project and discuss future management of priority woodland habitats.

The Restoring Priority Woodland Habitats conference will take place on 6th and 7th October in Claremorris, Co Mayo.

The woodland restoration project, co-financed by the EU LIFE programme and Coillte, focussed on nine sites, totalling 550.8 hectares, in Ireland. The aims of the project were to remove non-native tree species, restore natural hydrology, extend yew woodland, control invasive exotic shrubs and promote the value of priority woodland.

As a result of the restoration works, conditions have been put in place which will allow priority woodland to regenerate naturally in future years.

The first day of the conference will consist of presentations by the project team and local and international experts. The second day will include a visit to the restoration site at Clonbur – a remarkable woodland habitat associated with limestone pavement, alluvial woodland and yew woodland.

Registration for the two-day event is free and includes meals and return transport between the conference hotel and Clonbur Wood. Accommodation costs are not included.
