Stop Climate Chaos, the coalition of organisations campaigning to stop runaway climate change, has welcomed the announcement by Communications and Energy Minister Eamon Ryan to bring in a climate bill before the end of the year.
Minister Ryan announced at the end of May that a climate bill modelled on existing legislation in the UK will begin to be drafted within months. “Early movement on a climate law will provide significant momentum to Ireland living up to its responsibility to tackle climate change, already having a devastating impact on many people around the world. This year has to be the year of climate action if we are to save the world from climate chaos,” said Colin Roche of Oxfam, a spokesperson for the coalition.
“A robust climate law, which matches action with what science tells us is needed, will give Ireland some much needed credibility heading into these talks. The law and the Copenhagen agreement must ensure that we cut carbon emissions sufficient to keep global warming below two degrees Celsius and should be in place before Copenhagen,” continued Mr Roche.
Stop Climate Chaos is a coalition of 27 civil society organisations campaigning to ensure Ireland plays its part in preventing runaway climate change. Current members include development, environmental, youth and faith based organisations. For more information see: www.stopclimatechaos.ie.
