The Benedictine monks of Glenstal Abbey, Co Limerick, have been working to preserve and promote ecological balance for some years. Nestled at the foot of Slieve Felim, their 500 acre estate boasts delightful streams, lakes and woodland paths.
Since the early ’90s a research team, working on old manuscripts and maps, has been involved in restoring the 17th century walled garden, the oldest terraced garden in Ireland, as well as studying the post-glacial origins of the forests and their continued preservation. It is also working to extend the oak forest as well as participating in the international ex situ conifer conservation programme in association with the Royal Botanical Gardens, Edinburgh.
A wetland system to treat domestic and agricultural waste products has recently been completed and new ways of converting solid wastes into energy and other resources are now being explored.
Other environmental initiatives include the efficient use of energy, the reduction or elimination of toxic cleaning fluids and educational activities, including seminars by environmental consultants to the monks and school pupils.
Glenstal Abbey represents a welcome haven amidst the busyness of everyday 21st century living. Visitors are welcome all year round. To book into the guesthouse or for further info see www.glenstal.org.
