Faith and Ecology Group, St Colmcille Parish, Ballyhackamore, Belfast

Our group is a committee of the Parish Pastoral Council. We meet monthly and aim to produce material for inclusion in the Sunday parish bulletin and prayers for use in the Sunday liturgy. We try to have a public forum meeting every three months and so far we have shown Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, an inter-church forum with specialist speakers, an evening with speakers from Friends of the Earth and a day conference featuring Fr Sean McDonagh. This latter was attended by 110 people and included displays from Trocaire, Christian Aid, Tearfund and Eco Congregation.

We made each family a Christmas card, which contained a page of environmental information produced by Enfo. This was followed by a sheet of New Year Green Resolutions and a New Year Eco Prayer.

Finally, we believe it is important for us to keep one eye on environmental issues but the other eye on the Christian basis of our obligation and commitment to care for the earth and those suffering from the effects of climate change.

We would like to link up with parishes that have an ecology group or are trying to form one. Contact Moya and Peter Gahan. 028 9070 5412
