A church in Canada was so impressed by the Eco Congregation Ireland programme that it now has a weekly environmental club for young people.
The Creation Keepers club encourages children between six and 13 at St Brice’s Anglican Church to be more environmentally aware. The kids have taken on the message wholeheartedly and are now keen to change their congregation’s environmental practices.
Before Christmas they investigated green Christmas gifts and eco-friendly gift-wrapping. Now they are going to switch their focus to a bag campaign, looking at what plastic bags cost the environment and then designing environmentally friendly bags to sell.
Taking charge of the nine children is high school guidance counsellor, Colleen Point, who describes Creation Keepers as “an active group” which takes leadership and initiative and generates its own ideas. As well as learning about the environment, Creation Keepers also helps the young people learn about positive group dynamics, brainstorming, presentation skills and being leaders in the church.
